In July 1965, a discussion between Past Optimist International President Carl Bowen and former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover resulted in the birth of the Respect For Law Program. This program inspires respect for the law among young people and acknowledges the outstanding contribution of those charged with law enforcement. Each year the first full week of May is designated Respect For Law Week
Each year, due to the work of the Kennesaw Optimist Club, the County Board, by proclamation, designates a week as Optimist Respect For Law Week. During that period, the Optimist Club pursues various activities which include distribution of Good Citizenship booklets and other material.
